Description
Photo taken in June, 2013 @ Zoo Artis, The Netherlands
This is one of few photos of the Gray-Handed Night Monkey that actually turned out well. They're normally kept in dark houses, where a good photographer who cares about the animals, would not think to use the flash. Therefore I did not expect to see one here in this open, new house where they were brought to after closing the night house.
Yet, here he is, out in the open, bright house though he looks like he's going to make a run for it every second now.
Species: Gray-Handed Night Monkey or Doeroecoeli (Nachtaapje of Doeroecoeli)
Latin name: Aotus Griseimembra
Originates from certain parts of Columbia and Venezuela.
Current status: Vulnerable
Did you know:
…Night Monkeys are also called Owl Monkeys.
…The Gray-Handed Night Monkey was formerly believed to be a subspecies of the Gray-Bellied Night Monkey.
…As it’s name suggests, the Gray-Handed Night Monkey is a nocturnal, rather small Monkey living in the trees.
…It is one of few monogamous Monkeys.
