Description

Photo taken in July, 2014 @ BestZOO, The Netherlands

Whenever I spot a Mongoose perched on top, I feel the urge to get closer so as to crop out some of the obstructions in the background. But when you've tried to do that a couple of times,  you quickly learn that when you creep closer, they tend to come down from their perch.
Which is why this was taken a bit farther away, so as to capture him still on top :) I really like the way you can see nearly all of  his paws.

Species: Banded Mongoose (Zebramangoeste)

Latin name: Mungos Mungo

Originates from Africa.

Current status: Least Concern.

Yep, they're the most common small carnivores out here.  But strangely enough I haven't had them in my garden yet, while I have had slender mongooses a few times.  I think the surrounding countryside is too open ... they like fairly well-wooded regions, such as the riverine woodland at the local bird sanctuary, where I've seen them a lot but not recently.
