Learn To Fly

Description

Photo taken in April, 2017 @ Oliemeulen, The Netherlands

It was a very windy day, and this Saker Falcon (at least, I think it is one - else it should be an European Kestrel) was really enjoying the wind. He was flapping his wings and trying to catch some height to fly off. However, like all the other birds, he had his perch outside to which he was tied, so he could stretch his wings and fly a bit, he couldn't actually fly off.

Still, he's such a handsome bird, and with his wings spread, he made the most beautiful model

Species: Saker Falcon (Sakervalk)

Latin Name: Falco cherrug or Hierofalco cherrug

Originates from Eastern Europe and Asia

Current status: Endangered

Did you know:

… The origine of “saker” in the name of this animal, comes from the Arabic word for “falcon”.

… In recent years hybrids of peregrine falcons and saker falcons have become common in the falconry for added size from the Saker Falcon and speed from the Peregrine falcon
