Description
When: September 1, 2017
Where: Uilen- en Dierenpark De Paay Beesd, The Netherlands
Some zoos seem small, quaint and the kind you can easily pass up on visiting. But then you discover the zoo has an animal in their collection you'll likely see nowhere else.
At first, we thought we'd get to see some kind of Honey Badger or Ratel with this little one - but it's actually an entirely different animal, from a different continent altogether!
We'd seen a Ratel earlier in the year, but we'd never seen a (Lesser) Grison. This guy didn't sit still for even a millisecond at first, and with the teeny-tiny mesh fence, it was impossible to get a good photo because he'd get really close to the fence. And seeing these teeth, you know you're dealing with a carnivore - a small one, but still, a carnivore.
So we had to get creative - but the Grison seemed to tire a bit. He'd sit, or lie down for a bit, and we got to play with our positioning and in the end, got some really cool shots of this guy
Species: Lesser Grison (Kleine grizon)
Latin name: Galictis Cuja
Originates from southern South America.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…Lesser Grison are semi-plantigrade, meaning they walk partly on the soles of their feet – feet that are webbed, yet more adapted for running and climbing than swimming.
…These mustelids are monogamous, can live solitary or in family groups with parents and offspring.
…They possess anal scent glands that can produce a noxious smell not unlike that of a Skunk though weaker.
